Welcome
There are many beautiful houses in the world and even in Ulm but there is only one - at least in Ulm - whose historical name is "Beautiful House". And as it is decorated with an inscription, it will be described here.

To facilitate the reading, I have extended the abbreviations of the inscription to the full text in my transcription, putting the added letters in brackets.
The name of this house comes from its beauty and from the fact that it is situated in the fishermen's quarter of Ulm. In earlier times, the house seems to have been particularly beautiful among the surrounding fishermen houses because otherwise there would have been no reason to call it "Beautiful House". Nowadays there are many other beautiful houses in the fishermen's quarter, which has become a famous touristic attraction.
Formerly, fluvial transportation was an important profession in Ulm but little by little it lost most of its importance as the barges were bigger and bigger and the water of the Danube became too shallow for them. Additionally, passenger transportation was more and more limited to occasional touristic trips.
During the 17th and 18th century, fluvial troop transportation to the theaters of war against the Ottoman empire was much quicker than any other method and it allowed for transportation of many soldiers at once. As the Turkish territories were situated downstream, they could be reached quickly but the return voyage was a long and heavy work.

Exiting the Ulm main station, take the pedestrian subway just in front of you and continue straight ahead in the pedestrian street but take the first street to the right. Go down to the Blau brook and follow it into the fishermen's quarter. Go thru it downstream. Just before arriving at the riverside city wall you should see the Beautiful House on your right.
