Although Munich is a crowded city having about a million four hundred thousand inhabitants, there are still important places of wilderness right in its urban area. One of them is the so-called Flaucher, where a long wooden footbridge crosses the Isar river. Let's have a walk on it!

Under the Flaucher footbridge there is a height-adjustable barrage damming up the Isar river according to the necessity of flood protection. Downstream the barrage, the Isar will mostly form several branches with small islands and beaches between them but when the snow is thawing in the Alps (at about 100 km of distance), the Isar will be one single large and violent river.

As the barrages installed on the Isar have proved to be a less and less effective flood protection (due to the climate change?), large parts of the Isar have been restored to their natural state and others will be. There is no better flood protection than a well-calculated, i.e. slightly controlled natural environment.

In its restored parts, the Isar is already transforming its riverbed into a romantic wilderness.

On the right, there is the high building of the Rinecker surgical clinic.

By the way, in Munich no building higher than the belltowers of the cathedral (Frauenkirche) – about 100 m – is allowed due to landscape protection laws. This is still true in 2014.
