Although Munich is a crowded city having about a million four hundred thousand inhabitants, there are still important places of wilderness right in its urban area. One of them is the so-called Flaucher, where a long wooden footbridge crosses the Isar river. Let's have a walk on it!

Under the Flaucher footbridge there is a height-adjustable barrage damming up the Isar river according to the necessity of flood protection. Downstream the barrage, the Isar will mostly form several branches with small islands and beaches between them but when the snow is thawing in the Alps (at about 100 km of distance), the Isar will be one single large and violent river. |
|
As the barrages installed on the Isar have proved to be a less and less effective flood protection (due to the climate change?), large parts of the Isar have been restored to their natural state and others will be. There is no better flood protection than a well-calculated, i.e. slightly controlled natural environment. In its restored parts, the Isar is already transforming its riverbed into a romantic wilderness. |

In summer, all these beaches will be crowded... |

On the left in the distance, there is the chimney of the Thalkirchen heating and power station. |
|
Upstream, there is the wooden bridge crossing the Isar near the zoo (Tierparkbrücke). |
|
On the right, there is the high building of the Rinecker surgical clinic. By the way, in Munich no building higher than the belltowers of the cathedral (Frauenkirche) about 100 m is allowed due to landscape protection laws. This is still true in 2014. |

Downstream, there are lots of branches of the Isar... |

Continuing our walk in the direction of the center of the city on the left side of the Isar, we look back to the Flaucher footbridge. |

Holidays in Munich? Excellent idea! But where to stay? |
Whether you are looking for a room, an apartment, a hotel, a guest house,
or any other accommodation, |
Arrival by Public Transport
From Munich Hbf (= Hauptbahnhof = main station), take a subway (U-Bahn) or a streetcar to Sendlinger Tor, where you change to asubway going to Thalkirchen or Fürstenried West. Alight at the Thalkirchen station and walk in the direction of the zoo (Tierpark). After crossing the Isar river on the wooden bridge (Tierparkbrücke), take the footpath going to the left (downstream). After some two hundred meters you will reach the beginning of the Flaucher footbridge.
Indications concerning the arrival correspond to our personal knowledge or even experience, but we cannot assume any responsibility for their rightness. When you are reading this page, things may have changed in reality.
