Not far from the Asam Church, you can see an inscription that talks of a certain Dr. Faustus staying in Ingolstadt for some time. This is a rather interesting name but what's the matter with it?

Translation

Comment

According to the English Wikipedia, the protagonist of the lots of literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works narrating Faust's life is a historical person whose name was Johann Georg Faust. He often used the second part of his first name only, and mostly in the colloquial form of Jörg, which is also used in our inscription.

The author of the inscription did not have to mention Goethe because if German people think of Faust, they automatically think of Goethe. So, Faust staying in Ingolstadt is like Goethe staying there.

Obviously there have been discussions about the identity of "this Dr. Jörg Faustus" and the reliability of the tradition it is based on. That is why the inscription insists on the existence of an official paper and "a reliable tradition" that prove its authenticity.

The date of the official minutes mentioned in the inscription is the first Wednesday after June 28, 1528 (see the English Wikipedia).

If you have any more information, please tell us! Thank you very much indeed!
