Welcome
The nice town of Fondo with about 1'500 inhabitants, situated in northwestern Trentino (Italy), is passed through by a picturesque gorge that a small brook has carved out in the rocky ground. In spring 2002, a (recommendable) walking tour led us across this gorge to Lago Smeraldo (Emerald Lake), the picturesque reservoir at the entry of the gorge, and farther on to the mountains.

Arrival by Public Transport
By train, you can only go to Merano (Meran), Mezzocorona or Trento, and you must take a bus for the continuation to Fondo.
From the south-east, as far as I know, you can take a little train from Trento or Mezzocorona to Cles and continue by bus.
From the north, there is a direct bus line from Merano/Meran. It is a marvellous trip high above the Etsch (Adige) valley, sometimes with an open view on the opposite Dolomites as far as the Rosengarten (Catenaccio). After passing the Gampenpass (Passo Palade) you will have a wide look to the south, at the mountains of western Trentino.
HINT: At the Meran (Merano) railway station (and at other railway stations), you can buy a tourist weekly season ticket that is valid for all public bus lines throughout South Tirol (Alto Adige). With this ticket you can also go from Meran (Merano) to Fondo (and obviously come back from there) in spite of the fact that Fondo is not part of South Tirol (Alto Adige).
Indications concerning the arrival correspond to our personal knowledge or even experience, but we cannot assume any responsibility for their rightness. When you are reading this page, things may have changed in reality.
