Original Text (in German)

Buddenturm

Translation

Buddenturm

Out of the eleven gates and seven towers of the former fortification ring, only the Buddenturm with some vestiges of the medieval city wall has been preserved. Its use was changing thru the centuries (fortification tower, prison, gunpowder mill, arsenal). Raised to 40 m and provided with a crenelation cornice, in 1880, it finally served as a water tower. War-damaged, it was shortened again and renovated with a six-sided conical roof in traditional manner.

Comment

If the inscription described here says that the Buddenturm is the only medieval tower preserved, this is not entirely correct because there is still the shorter, but enormously thicker Zwinger tower, which was built in 1525.

Nowadays the space formerly occupied by the medieval fortification ring is a very comfortable cycle way under shady trees round the center of the city.
