Linguistic Anecdote

A linguistic joke you can often hear in Germany begins with the following question:

"Which are the comparative forms of the German adjective 'black'?"

The answer: "Black > Paderborn > Münster."

(Note that "black" is the symbolic color of catholicism in Germany.)

The city of Münster is situated in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the banks of the small Lake Aa (Aasee). Münster was a leading member of the Hanseatic League (German: Hansestadt) but had enormous problems when, from 1534 to 1535, the Anabaptist rebels wanting to create a theocratic and eschatological State occupied the city and finally were brutally defeated. Nowadays Münster has about 271,000 inhabitants and is the very catholic center of the Münsterland region.

Münster has managed to preserve a rich architectural heritage covering several centuries. And of course, there are many interesting inscriptions to be read.
