The eight meter high Superwoman sculpture was created by the American artist Tom Otterness. With its about 50 small bronze sculptures it is supposed to symbolize the daily struggle for life "small people" (i.e. we) are subjected to in the overwhelming capitalist system. On the contrary of the English term of "superwoman", the German "Überfrau" is not absolutely positive. In fact, this term does not exist in current German language but it was forged on the model of "Übermensch". Both terms can stand for a "superperson" having more positive qualities than other people but - negatively taken - it may also be a brutally dominant person. Think of the Nazi doctrine, which divided mankind in "Übermenschen" (the Germans and their allies) and "Untermenschen" (all the other nations). Additionally you may find a Freudian nuance coming from the psychologist's conception of the super-ego (Über-Ich in German). If you like to see things this way. |
