Comment

This video is an example of Xeniya Simonova's non-profit activism. Here she is using her sand art to help a little girl named Anastasia, who is severely suffering from vaccine damage after her vaccination against German measles. For further information about Anastasia's sickness and possibilities of aid, double-click on the video to go to the corresponding Youtube page, which tells the whole story on its right side (in Russian).

Nastenka is a pet name for Anastasia. Pet names are very very frequent in Russian speech and literature. They may have a diminutive meaning, but above all express a good feeling, an emotional closeness. Pet names are mostly derived from first names and mostly apply to human beings or domestic animals (especially pets). But you can also find pet names derived from common words, e.g. to speak of some beloved object. For many Russian names and words there are several possibilities of deriving pet names. For a commented list of frequently-used Russian pet names, see Russische Kosenamen (in German) or Diminutifs des prénoms russes (in French).
