Arrival - Bibliography - Inscriptions of Obernai - Internet - Ten Towns Alliance
The small town of Obernai, which is located on the Alsatian Road of Wine, formerly was named Oberehnheim and it was a free town of the Holy Roman Empire and a member of the Ten Towns Alliance. Up to now it has preserved much of its medieval character. Obernai has a partnership with Gengenbach (Baden, Germany).

Ten Towns Alliance
The free online encyclopedia named Wikipedia (German edition) gives the following information in its article titled "Freie Reichsstädte" ("Free Towns of the Empire", my rough translation):
"Up to the French Revolution, there were 10 Alsatian towns of the Empire, which had formed the Ten Towns Alliance since 1255. These were:
Straßburg (Strasbourg), Hagenau (Haguenau), Colmar, Schlettstadt (Sélestat), Weißenburg (Elsass) (Wissembourg), Oberehnheim (Obernai), Rosheim, Mülhausen (Mulhouse), Kaisersberg, Türkheim (Turckheim), Münster (Elsass) (Munster)"

The pages 220-222 are devoted to Obernai, but one entire page is a photo of one of these typical half-timbered houses and half a page contains a very clear and useful city map. |
