Welcome
The small town of Erstein (nearly 10.000 inhabitants) is situated in the Upper Rhine Plain, about 22 km south of Strasbourg, midway between Obernai and the Rhine. Its sous-préfecture was closed a lon time ago, the spacious site of its spinning mill was transformed into a residential area many years ago but its sugar factory is still supplying the whole of France with Erstein Sugar (sucre d'Erstein) that everybody knows, and since years an important industrial zone is growing beyond the railway line Strasbourg - Mulhouse, where the Wurth museum of Erstein is awaiting its visitors. The unfortunately increasing number of modern architectural eyesores apart (among which the modern part of the former rider relay (Etappenstall), the center of Erstein is still an ensemble that is worth being seen and where traditional half-timbered houses prevail. Nowadays the former riders relay serves as a House of Cultural Heritage Maison du patrimoine) but that is why the modern architectural eyesore it presents particularly hurts... Though many watercourses and canals have been filled up, water is omnipresent in and around Erstein. The flood areas near the Ill are not far away and the ground-water level is right underneath the surface of the earth. The near forests are the domain of gnats. In Alsatian, gnats are called Schnooge (as on the other Side of the Rhine). That is why Alsatians like to sing the song whose title is Der Hans im Schnoogeloch (John in the gnats hole). |

Arrival By Public Transport
As Erstein is situated on the railway line going from Strasburg to Mulhouse no international train will ever stop at the Erstein station, it is inevitable to change at one of the two stations mentioned above. Outside France, it will often be impossible to get tickets going up to Erstein. In this case, you should plan enough transfer time to allow you to purchase (and validate) the Strasbourg - Erstein respectively Mulhouse / Colmar - Erstein ticket there. Possible exception: very early ticket order on sncf.fr, with postal dispatch to your home address.
Travellors coming from the region of Freiburg im Breisgau (Fribourg-en-Brisgau) and wanting to avoid the detour via Offenburg and Strasburg can take the local train or bus from Breisach, then another bus to Colmar and finally the train to Erstein (Strasburg direction). But unfortunately the frequency of trains and busses is not very high on this transversal connection.
For more information on public transport, see bahn.de (in German) or sncf.fr (in French).
The Erstein railway station is situated about 2 km outside the center of the town. During the rush hours you will find busses to go to the center but the rest of the time you must take a taxi or walk (on comfortable sidewalks). At the beginning of the old town, near the cemetery, you will see a construction that is perhaps unique on earth: the Upper Gate (porte du haut, Obertor), which was partially reconstructed, stands in the middle of a rectangular, nearly square roundabout. The inhabitants really speak of a square roundabout... If you look at the zoomed-in town plan of Erstein, you can admire that geometrical phenomenon, whose four edges are not rounded off either but only made more practical by four light-colored squares.
Indications concerning the arrival correspond to our personal knowledge or even experience, but we cannot assume any responsibility for their rightness. When you are reading this page, things may have changed in reality.
