Etymological Dictionaries

Most on-line dictionaries offer several, certain even a great many of language pairs. My personal experience shows that the databases of the various languages may have very different volumes and qualities. Many dictionaries are particularly powerful or poor in certain languages and areas of interest. My related notes only reflect my own experience. Other users may see things in a completely different manner.

Queries starting from a foreign language and aiming another foreign language will often be refused or find less appreciable answers. In those cases – if possible – make a detour via the language of the dictionary's user interface.

Certain on-line dictionaries offer a virtual keybord or a selection list of special letters to help you enter the letters and words using other alphabets than those consisting in simple Latin letters. But terms containing special letters may often be found if you enter the coresponding basic Latin letters, e.g. "o" instead of Hungarian "ő".

You can equally work around the lack of diacritical marks placing a dot (.) after the basic letter the diacritical mark belongs to. For example if you want to search for "mocasín", you can type "mocasi.n" in the search box. Or if you want "ñañara", you can type "n.an.ara".

Use the search field of your favorite amazon site! Generally you best visit the site that is located in the same country as the delivery address. You can search for various criteria (e.g. product group, author, title, ISBN / ASIN number). There will never be an obligation to buy anything.
