Translation

In the years 1839 – 1848
leading Polish revolutionaries (or: the leading Polish revolutionaries)
fighting for an independent and democratic Poland
suffered in the casemates of Spilberk.

In the years 1940 – 1944
Polish fighters were held prisoners
and murdered here
by German fascists (or: by the German fascists).

HONOUR THEIR MEMORY

This plaque was set in the wall in 1960.

As in Polish there is neither a definite nor an indefinite article, the choice between the variants contained in my translation must be made according to the following criteria:

  •  
  • historical truth (Was the whole revolutionary direction emprisoned here or only some of its members?)

  •  
  • desired or spontaneous understanding at the time when the plaque was set in the wall (Did Polish people see a collective crime of all German fascists, or did they think of a personal culpability of the fascists on the spot?)
