The SS state: The system of German concentration camps by Eugen Kogon
I read this book in German. Its English version is a translation from German.
Up to now this book is one of the most important standard works on the Nazi state and its system of concentration camps. It is hard to read due to what it deals with, but it is necessary to read it.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany by William L. Shirer
I read this book in German translation.
Shirer's book is one of the great classics of historiography on the 3rd Reich. It is a bulky - but very interesting - volume that follows the events almost day by day and takes an important part of its knowledge from the author's own experience because until the beginning of the war he had lived in Germany as a foreign correspondent and he had often met a lot of the important persons that his book speaks of.
